Description

This is a 2010 photo of Harlem CORE member Bob Harris (middle, hat). He is surrounded by Minister Humza Al-Hafeez (left) and the minister's son (right).

Bob Harris was an active member from the time of Gladys Harrington to the early 1970's. He was also a known, above board police officer, having joined the police while a member of Harlem CORE. He went on to become a member of the Executive Committee, the treasurer and head of the Fundraising Committee. He was also in charge of security for CORE's 1968 national conference as well as Roy Innis' personal security, in general. He still considers himself a member of CORE and a good friend of Roy Innis.

After he stopped being active in CORE during the early 1970's, he went on to become the vice president of the Society of Afro-American Policemen, a national organization of Black policemen and other city workers. Humza Al-Hafeez (then known as Leonard Weir or Leonard 12X) was its president.

Both men represent a truly untold story of the movement - that of the militant Black policeman, a classic 'man in the middle' story, not trusted by fellow activists or other police officers. Humza Al-Hafee at the time was a member of the Nation of Islam (now a minister in the Lost-Found Nation of Islam). While Harris was never a muslim, both still consider themselves Black nationalists and are well respected in NYC's nationalist community. In fact, it was members of the Black Power group (like Donald Elfe and Joe Jackson) who first told me of Mr. Harris.
