Harlem CORE flyer for rally against Columbia University
Subject
Harlem CORE
Description
This is a 1968 flyer for Harlem CORE rally to protest Columbia University's plans for expansion. The list of speakers is a who's who of Harlem's Black leadership. Most interesting among the names is Louis Farrakhan who was then the minister of the Nation of Islam's Mosque #7.
What's significant about this is as the flyer announces, Harlem CORE was then a Black Power group and as such, Malcolm X was its primary influence. It has long been rumored that Farrakhan was in some involved in the X's assassination and the fact that he became the minister of Malcolm's mosque certainly did not help.
This speaks to a certain level of respect that Harlem CORE and CORE had for the Nation of Islam and in particular Elijah Muhammad, regardless of the negative feelings that individual members of Harlem CORE may have had against Farrakhan.
